How Queue works
A waiting room is a piece of software everybody already runs badly: a paper list, a number dispenser, a member of staff remembering who came in before who. Queue replaces it without asking the customer to install anything.
Joining the line
The customer scans a code and joins from the browser on their phone. No app, no account, no password to invent for a shop they are standing inside. They get a chime when their turn comes up, and they can turn the chime off. When a phone cannot turn notifications on, the app says why instead of failing quietly.
Not everyone arrives with a phone, so staff can add a walk-in by hand, and the door screen prints a paper ticket, either on a Bluetooth thermal printer or from the browser.
The screens in the room
The door guard screen opens on any spare tablet from a single link, and shows a QR code so anyone with a phone can join themselves. A TV pairs to a queue with a short code, typed from the remote into a short address, which is the only interaction a television remote is good at.
The dashboard plays a sound when someone joins the line. Several counters can serve from the same line at the same time, so a busy afternoon does not need a second queue and a decision about which one to stand in.
The part that matters
Every one of those screens is showing the same line. The phone in the customer’s hand, the wall display, the door and the dashboard agree on who is next, or the whole thing is a worse paper list. That agreement is the product; the rest is arrangement.
Running it
Staff sign in with a Google account, so there is no password to set or forget on a device several people share. Signing up a business takes a short form, and the business address fills itself in from the location picked during setup. Owners can see the tickets their queue has issued over time. The QR poster prints from the dashboard.
Actions that cannot be undone ask first, and anyone can report a problem from inside the app, which is how most of the entries in the changelog started.
